Picture Post: Decision Making August 20th, 2012

Vinod Kumar

Each indecision brings its own delays and days are lost lamenting over lost days… What you can do or think you can do, begin it. For boldness has magic, power and genius in it. – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The above lines pretty much sums up what I had in mind. If you are thinking of a context, well just assume the situation when you had to buy a new gadget (say Mobile, TV, Stereo System etc). More the choices, more the trouble to get into a decision. In the same way in professional life, you need to take strong decisions on where you want to be based on where you are. Don’t get distracted by what others are doing !!!

Some people are very decisive when it comes to avoiding decisions. I would say, take the bold step and keep moving. Life is an experience of the choices you have made so why wait and procrastinate.

Are you a symptom of this? Would love to hear from you.

You also bring a valid point. Let he take that appreciation part and not getting motivated side of things as a separate post later. I carry some strong opinions on that :) Thanks again for taking time and dropping a line here Hari !!!

    Ur post is most welcome.

Life is an experience of the choices you have made so why wait and procrastinate.

  4. Dear Vinod,

The blog post is very relevant for day-to-day decision making. The graph is interesting. But there is also another aspect of life called “A rolling stone gathers no moss.” There should be a balance.

Excellent post on very good subject.

In the past I’d problem making decisions while shopping because of no of choices available and also fear of being cheated. But now Internet has solved that problem to some extent. ;)

You’re very right, one needs to take bold step and keep moving in life, even if your decision don’t get you what you expected, it would be a great experience, a lesson learnt and would help you to take better decision next time.

And most important point you made was
“Don’t get distracted by what others are doing !!!”

Thanks for this wonderful post. :)

By the way, I guess your post is related to “people” making decision and is not referring to IT systems.

Do you have any pointers/links/books on decision making from People’s perspective?

From IT perspective, Tally is the FA Package which was tagged as DSS Tool. Later versions were named as EIS and ESS tools. Now we have some more jargons in this world – MIS, BI, Analytic’s etc. It’s really an interesting subject. Hope I am not going out of context of this blog post … :-)

    • Vinod Kumar says:

Yes Kamlesh. It is about people behavior both personal and professional too.

What you are mentioning is the concepts of jargons around BI that the industry abuses. There is no one solution for this, but will try to cover in some other post.

  7. Nice graph!! It describes a lot. Thanks.
