IIS 6.0 Remote Administration … January 5th, 2004

The more I start playing with IIS I discover new features every day. I think you can catch the list of IIS features in my previous post. But now I found that from IIS 6.0 you can do remote administration. Very very interesting. To enable the same, goto setup of Windows Components -> Application Servers -> Internet Information Service -> World Wide Web Service -> Remote Administration (HTML) and check the same.

Once you are done with the setup. Start a browser instance and type http://<YourServerName>8089. When prompted for the credentials, give a valid username and we are all set to administer IIS remotely.

Caveat: Remote Administation is not enabled on a DC.

“Server Event Tracking” on Windows 2003 … January 5th, 2004

This is something I came across first when using Windows 2003. We are asked a reason when shutdown or during abnormal shutdown we are asked for a reason during startup. Nice feature … But more often than not irritating for me atleast … So here is how we can disable this from coming up …

1. Click Start, Run, and type in GPEDIT.MSC. or Select “Group Policy Object Editor” with the mmc snapin.
2. Traverse to Computer Configuration Settings-> System-> Display Shutdown Event Tracker.
3. Disable the policy.

Simple as it can get a GPO and we are all set … :) … For critical production servers keep this feature on as it allows us to track the events … You can always play around with test environments with these settings for sure …
